SYNOPSIS

Hal is a true depiction of the area in which he lives, repeatedly breaking the law with his fat, charismatic and often drunk friend, John Falstaff. Hal’s dad, Henry, has tried again and again to lend Hal a helping hand - it is a constant battle that dominates the fragile family. Whilst Henry is tirelessly fighting to adopt his young and vulnerable nephew, he receives some devastating news which threatens to rip the family apart. Self Same Sky tells the powerful story of how a cruel world makes its mark, resulting in uncompromising consequences within an ever-compromised world.

A WORD OR TWO FROM THE DIRECTORS

Self Same Sky is a true to life story with a moving and uplifting message to the global youth of today.

We were originally commissioned to adapt and direct William Shakespeare’s Henry IV – Part II. Initially we had no intention of abandoning the original text, quite the opposite in fact, as we were very excited about the notion of adapting a Shakespearian play for screen. The opportunity to adapt such a play, whilst embracing the original text and transplanting it into another world, offered an incredibly rich foundation for us to build upon.

After the first and second read we felt that the plays' structure lacked dramatic form and featured very little historical material – frankly we found it boring. However, we quickly realised that at the core lay the potential for a very powerful story that would embrace the resources we had available. Given that The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy are all about engaging with the talents of young people, we desperately wanted to create a film that was truly made by young people, about young people, for young people - and be bloody good for it!

For this reason we soon began collaborating with writer and friend, Jordan Dawes to create an original screenplay loosely based on Shakespeare’s Henry IV – Part II. For some young people (and indeed adults too) faced with the harsh reality of modern life, a simple recipe for fulfilment, satisfaction and happiness can become a difficult journey full of anti-social behaviour, crime, and a catastrophic lack of social and personal responsibility. This can of course result in devastating consequences.

The youth of today has the power to build a nation, to make a society good and improve our culture and communities. Young people’s hope is our future; however, let’s not forget that young people are not only the future but also the present and a world without an inquisitive youth is a dull one.

We hope that we have told an important human story, and told it well. The film certainly does not celebrate or encourage anti-social behaviour, crime or lack of responsibility - it simply addresses these very real aspects of life to perhaps encourage a better way of being.
