"An inspiration, keeping true to The Marat Sade and the 'Artaudian Theatre' concept, and giving me a feel for live theatre once again" Stephen Bendelack — The League of Gentlemen, Little Britain, The Mighty Boosh

The Original A Thin Line Between Genius and Insanity

Based on The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as performed by the inmates of The Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade and The Theatre of Cruelty concept, theorised by Antonin Artaud.

Inward Turmoil started as a small experimental piece of theatre at South Cheshire College in Crewe with a cosy cast of six which later grew into a cast of twenty-six. A right handful they were too!

Through blood, sweat, tears, headaches, arguments, stomach pains, chest pains (you name it!), the production’s potential was recognised and a healthy chunk of money and resources were allocated. This propelled the original production into a much bigger piece of work: Inward Turmoil – The Revival, which went on to dominate Dane Bank Theatre in Crewe for the majority of 2004.

The Revival A Thin Line Between Genius and Insanity

Based on The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as performed by the inmates of The Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade and The Theatre of Cruelty concept, theorised by Antonin Artaud.

Following the original 2003 production, Inward Turmoil grew into a re-imagined production of significant scale and theatrical madness.

A sketch by Juan Jose Montegrande inspired by the original performance of Inward Turmoil.

Inward Turmoil is how Inglenook’s founding Artistic Directors William Forster and John Montegrande met. William noticed John behaving strangely in a canteen and cast John in the original production as a result. John stayed attached to the show for the duration and later became the Associate Director.

The original production only had 12 lighting cues and 7 sound cues. The 2004 revival had 352 lighting cues and 312 sound cues! Kept the crew nice and busy at least!

Negotiations for a UK Tour of Inward Turmoil began in early 2005 but most of the interested theatres couldn’t handle the show’s size and technical requirements. Size really does matter!
